If you have some river rock that you do not know what to do with you can use it for your landscaping. If you do and find that you get low on the river rock, there are companies that can deliver it to your home. Keep reading to learn of two ways you can use this rock for your landscaping.

Build a Path

If you have any area of your yard where you want a path, you can use river rock to do this. River rock not only looks beautiful and unique, but you hear a crunching sound when walking over the rock. To use it as a path, you first need to dig the path a few inches deep. Fill it with a layer of gravel then lay landscaping fabric over the gravel. Tamp down the gravel and fabric with a tamping tool and lay a few inches of river rock over the fabric. Tamp down the river rock.

The landscaping fabric and gravel will prevent the river rock from sinking into the soil. This fabric also helps prevent weeds and grass from growing through the rocks, which can save you a lot of time. You will need to use side guards along the path to hold the river rock in place. The side guards could be made with larger stones, short fence railings, pavers, or garden edging.

Use as Mulch

If you have flower gardens in your yard you can use river rocks as mulch. Mulch not only makes the flower garden look much better but can also prevent weeds and grass from growing in the garden. You can find river rock in a variety of sizes, textures, and colors to make the mulch unique.

If you do want to use river rocks as mulch, first put a layer of landscaping fabric in the garden bed and lay the river rocks over the fabric. This prevents the rocks from sinking into the garden bed. It also makes it much easier for you to remove the rocks in the future if you like. Because you need to lay landscaping fabric, it is much easier to use these rocks as mulch when building a new flower garden. One benefit of using river rocks is you won't have to worry about replacing the mulch each year as you would if you use wood mulch.

There are many more ways you can use river rocks in landscaping, such as use as an edging around flower beds, to help with erosion problems, or make a rock garden.
